VW Passat 2.5 TDI V6 Diesel Pump Repairs

VW Passat Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump FaultsHave you found that your VW Passat is running a little rough? Or does the engine light keep coming on? If so this could be due to the Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump that is found fitted on VW Passat vehicles with the 2.5 TDI V6 Engine built between 1998 – 2003. This EDC module is known to fail a specific way due to the hybrid technology behind the design, causing it to cut out and not start at all.

VW Passat 2.5 Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump Common Problems
As mentioned above, there are some common faults that occur which indicate that the EDC pump has failed and we have highlighted the most popular issues that these come into our workshop with:

  • Loss of Power
  • Struggling To Start
  • Complete Non-Starter
  • Running Rough
  • Stored Fault Codes
  • Engine Light On

Any of the above symptoms can be directly linked to the Diesel Pump EDC, and getting it tested by a local garage is always advised to make sure. If you find that it is faulty, then your options are either get a brand new replacement unit as it is not possible to normally buy separate parts, which can work out be quite costly when additional labour, programming and coding costs are added to the bill. This will also only generally come with a 12-month warranty. The other option is to purchase a second-hand unit which will obviously be a lot cheaper, however, again would require labour, coding/programming at an extra cost and will more than likely only come with a 60-90 day limited warranty.

DPF Filter

BMW 7 Series DPF Removal Service

BMW 7 Series DPF Warning Light ProblemsA blocked Diesel Particulate Filter (or DPF) is a common fault found on the BMW 7 Series. The filter is integrated into the exhausts of modern diesel vehicles to allow the soot to be cleaned via regeneration before being released into the atmosphere. During this process, up to 80% of the diesel particulate emissions is removed, however, when the DPF is burning the soot via regeneration, an ash residue is left behind which cannot be burnt, and this causes the filter to eventually become blocked meaning the regeneration process can no longer be carried out.

Other factors that contribute to a blocked DPF include the use of low-quality fuels, faulty exhaust sensors, use of incorrect engine oil and not regenerating the filter successfully frequently which is done by driving 40-50mph for 15-20 miles in a low gear. As you can imagine, if you live in a city and only do city miles, this can become a little difficult to maintain, hence why a lot of vehicles we find that come to us with blocked DPF’s are city cars.

Once the DPF is blocked, further problems can be created such as power loss and damage to the EGR valve and turbocharger seals, as the blocked filter causes the exhaust gasses to try and escape from the next weakest point due to high pressure in the exhaust.

DPF FilterBMW 7 Series Blocked DPF Symptoms
As mentioned above, in order for the DPF to run efficiently the regeneration process needs to be carried out at the optimum conditions regularly, which is constantly at 40-50mph on a journey of 15-20 miles in a low gear, and when not carried out, causes it to get blocked up quicker. The most common faults codes that may appear due to a blocked dpf include:

  • DPF Warning Light On
  • Limp Mode / Loss Of Power
  • Engine Management Light On (EML / MIL)
  • Glow Plug Light Flashing
  • Poor Fuel Consumption

These will all indicate that the DPF filter on your BMW 7 Series needs cleaning or replacing, and sometimes can become so bad due to excess blockage and build up of exhaust back pressure, that it can cause your vehicle to become completely immobile. When this happens, you then risk damaging other parts of your vehicle and causing problems such as:

  • Oil Contamination
  • Engine Faults
  • EGR Faults
  • Turbocharger Faults
  • Injector faults

Problems like these will cost in the region of £1000+ to repair if the DPF blocked filter is not cleaned or replaced early on, therefore it is always advised that ant DPF faults are dealt with in a timely manner to avoid further damage to your vehicle.
