Honda Accord DPF Problems
The DPF on the Honda Accord is large in size and quite rightly sits directly after the turbocharger at the front of the engine and housed in a tin heat shield. It’s design is not one we can fault really because being directly connected to the turbocharger it will be subjected to maximum temperatures – however, the car itself is not designed for daily commercial/motorway use. Regenerating Honda Accord DPF’s
Once the Honda Accord DPF system flags up a fault that the DPF is blocked, the car will require a regeneration. This can be done in one of two ways.

  1. Regeneration whilst driving along a motorway
  2. Forced Regeneration at your local Honda dealership

Once the DPF regeneration is completed and successful, you will be able to reset the DPF light if not done automatically. However, unless you change your driving style the problem will persist – so before spending money doing forced regenerations, consider whether you will be changing your driving style to suit your vehicle or is maybe another option better for you? i.e. change your vehicle for a non-dpf model or have the DPF system professionally removed.

Each time you carry out a forced regeneration, you will be damaging elements of the DPF filter which allow the DPF to self-clean. This means that the filter will be unable to carry out frequent regenerations and thus will block up quicker and quicker each time. Also, you will be putting a lot of strain on the injectors whilst carrying out forced regenerations as the injectors are required to squirt diesel post-cycle at high pressure for prolonged periods of time to increase the EGT’s (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) in order for a successful DPF Regeneration.

We suggest having the DPF system completely removed from your Honda Accord. When remapping the DPF out of the ECU we do things manually – not with automated softwares. We will download the data from your ECU and manually scan through the 1000’s of data strings to remove & modify all DPF related data strings. Some DPF data strings will be interlinked with other sensors such as EGT sensors (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors), EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), Lambda/o2/Oxygen Sensor and so on. Automated softwares will attempt to delete all data strings and by doing so, will delete partial sensor related data strings as well causing data corruption which may not always be apparent immediately after having the DPF removed. In fact, you may not realise there are problems for up to 250 miles until the ECU stores a permanent fault code and shuts down in to SAFE MODE (Limp Home Mode).

The Seat Leon FR is a great car and delivers an impressive 170bhp from it’s 2.0TDi engine. This is the sportiest model currently on the market with lowered and stiffened suspension. As sporty as it is, it still manages to achieve an average of 55.4mpg and 670 miles on a full tank. However, it does have it’s flaws.

If you’re an owner, you’re probably aware of the common DPF fault within the exhaust system. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is designed to trap harmful gasses ie particulate soot matter and then burn them off at high temperatures to stop them exiting the exhaust into the atmosphere.

DPF Problems
The vehicle is manufactured with a DPF and not suitable in it’s factory state for local town driving, it must be driven on a dual-carriage / motorway at least twice weekly (dependant on weekly mileage) for a consistent 20-30 minutes to enable the DPF to regenerate. However, a regeneration is not always successful and eventually will lead to a blocked DPF which will result in loss of power and the car going into LIMP Mode.

There are many factors involved which can lead to the DPF becoming blocked, below we list just a few of the most common issues:

  • Wrong Grade Of Engine Oil Being Used On Services
  • Turning Engine Off During Regeneration
  • Failed Regenerations / Not Regeneration Often Enough
  • Diesel Injector Faults
  • Driving Style – not for town use.
When the DPF is blocked, we do not suggest driving the vehicle unless driving to and from a workshop to have the DPF problems rectified. You must drive in lower gears and high revs, keeping the revs above 2000rpm to help with exhaust gas flow and reduce the chances of further blockage and damage.
A blocked DPF can give various symptoms but below are some of the most common symptoms we find:
  • DPF / Engine / Warning Light On

  • Limp Mode / Loss Of power
  • Fault Codes: P242F, P2002, P0471, 18434 & 08194 etc..
  • Poor Fuel Consumption

Removing Seat Leon FR DPF SystemDPF Maintenance
Modern VAG diesels such as the FR should be regularly serviced with 5w-30 Long Life (Low-Ash) oil, it’s a little more expensive but will help to aid successful regenerations and help to maintain the DPF. If the vehicle is on a regeneration cycle, you must continue to drive at a constant speed of 30-40mph – keeping the revs at 2000rpm until the regeneration is completed. Failure to do so will block the filter up a lot quicker.

Replacement DPF’s
When the DPF is blocked beyond successful regeneration, a replacement filter is not cheap at all and can cost in excess of £1000+ (parts, labour & programming). If you are thinking of replacing the filter as a pose to removal, we always recommend using GENUINE filters only. Aftermarket filters (copy/pattern parts) although Type Approved will not deliver the same quality and you will find you will have a blocked DPF again sooner than expected, being out of pocket and back to square one.
