What actually happens to a unit on the bench, how to tell which of the two services you need, and what we do when the fault turns out to be somewhere other than the turbo.
Where are you based, and do I need to bring my vehicle to you?
We work on the component, not the vehicle. The workshop is at Unit 102 Reaver House, 12 East Street, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 1HX, United Kingdom, and the turbocharger or actuator travels to us on its own — your car stays where it is, on your drive or with your garage.
That is the point of a mail-in rebuild: you are not limited to a turbo specialist within driving distance, and your vehicle is not tied up in someone else’s workshop queue while the unit is worked on. Units come to us from every part of the UK.
What does a turbocharger rebuild actually include?
Every turbocharger is stripped to component level. The centre housing rotating assembly comes apart, reclaimable parts are cleaned back to bare metal, and the shaft, turbine and compressor wheels, bearing bores and housings are measured against original specification rather than judged by eye.
What goes back in is new. Journal bearings, thrust bearing and collar, piston-ring seals, O-rings and fasteners are renewed to genuine OE or OEM-grade specification, and uprated where a component has a recognised design weakness rather than replaced like for like. On a variable-geometry unit the vane mechanism is stripped, cleaned of carbon, freed and reset; on a wastegate design the valve and linkage are checked for play and correct travel. The rotating assembly is then balanced before final assembly.
The finished unit is run up and tested on the bench before it is boxed. The turbochargers we rebuild are listed across our turbo repair pages.
What does an electronic turbo actuator repair involve?
An electronic actuator is a small gearbox, a DC motor and a position sensor governed by a circuit board, and it usually fails as an assembly rather than as one part. We strip it, renew the motor, drive gears, position sensor and seals, and rework the board where the fault is electrical rather than mechanical.
Calibration decides whether it works on the car. The rebuilt unit is set to the travel and feedback range its own reference demands and proved through its full sweep on the bench, so it arrives back ready to bolt straight on — no coding, no dealer visit, no adaptation procedure. How do I know whether I need a turbo rebuild or an actuator repair?
The symptoms overlap, which is why sound turbos get replaced unnecessarily. As a rough guide, oil in the intake or exhaust, blue smoke, rising oil consumption or a metallic whine that changes with engine speed point at the rotating assembly — the bearings and seals inside the turbo itself.
Underboost or overboost codes, limp mode with no smoke and no unusual noise, and boost that never reaches target more often point at the boost-control side: the actuator, the vane mechanism it drives, or the wiring between the two.
Neither list replaces a diagnosis on the vehicle. If you are unsure, send us the stored fault codes and the reference numbers stamped on the unit, and we will tell you which of the two you are most likely looking at and what would confirm it.
What happens if you open my unit and the fault is somewhere else?
We test what arrives before we open it. An actuator is proved on the bench as received; a turbo is checked for shaft play, wheel damage and oil contamination before anything is dismantled. The fault we report is the fault the unit actually has.
If it tests good, we say so. A healthy part rebuilt and refitted leaves the real fault still on the vehicle, and you would be back where you started with one more part crossed off the list. On boost-control complaints the cause is often outside the unit altogether — a split boost hose or cracked intercooler, a carboned vane mechanism inside the turbo, a broken wire or corroded connector in the loop between the ECU and the actuator, or a restriction further down the exhaust that stops the turbo reaching target.

Can a turbocharger be beyond economic repair?
Yes, and we will tell you when it is. A snapped shaft, a compressor or turbine wheel destroyed by debris drawn through the engine, a cracked or heat-eroded housing, or a bearing bore worn past the point where a new bearing will hold its clearance — in those cases a rebuild would not hold, and building one anyway simply puts the problem back on your vehicle.
Sudden failures also leave debris behind. If a compressor wheel has broken up, fragments have already travelled downstream, and the intercooler and intake pipework need cleaning out before anything is refitted. We flag that when the unit shows the evidence, because a faultless rebuild fitted to a contaminated intake will not survive.
Will I get my own unit back, or an exchange one?
Your own. The unit you send is the unit that is rebuilt and returned, so the part number, the fitment and any vehicle-specific calibration stay exactly as they were. There is no chance of receiving a superficially similar variant that bolts on but behaves differently on the car.
It also means the history is known. We can see what failed and why, and correct that cause during the rebuild, instead of handing you a unit that has already lived an unknown life on somebody else’s engine.
Do you remove and refit the turbo as well?
No. Removal and refitting happen on the vehicle — by you or your garage — while we do the specialist work on the unit. What we can do is tell you what to get right on refit, because a large share of repeat failures are caused during fitting rather than by the rebuild.
Three things matter most. Renew or thoroughly clean the oil feed line: a restricted feed starves the bearings and will destroy a rebuilt turbo exactly as it destroyed the last one. Prime the bearing housing with clean oil and establish oil pressure before the engine is run up. And change the engine oil and filter, and confirm the oil return line and breather are clear, before the engine sees load.
Do you take work from garages and the motor trade?
Yes. Independent garages, workshops and main dealers send us units alongside private motorists, and the route is the same for both: the unit arrives, it is tested, we report what we found and quote, and it goes back rebuilt.
For trade work the report often matters as much as the rebuild. Knowing whether the actuator on the bench is genuinely faulty, or whether the vanes it drives have seized, is what stops a workshop fitting a part that does not cure the customer’s complaint.

What is covered, for how long, and why a rebuild is backed for longer than a used or exchange unit.
What warranty comes with the work?
A lifetime, unlimited-mileage warranty on the rebuild. No mileage cap and no expiry date: the rebuilt unit is covered for as long as it is on the vehicle it was rebuilt for.
That is a deliberate position. A warranty measured in months tells you how long the rebuilder expects the work to last. Ours reflects what the rebuild does — the cause of failure is identified and corrected, and the parts that wear are renewed or uprated rather than cleaned and put back.
Is the warranty the same on an actuator repair as on a turbo rebuild?
Yes — one term across both lines. An electronic turbo actuator repair carries the same lifetime, unlimited-mileage cover as a full turbocharger rebuild. There is no shorter term for the smaller job, and no separate tier for particular makes or turbo families.
People often expect electronic work to be backed for less time than mechanical work, because the electronics are the part they trust least. Here they are held to the same standard, because the motor, gear train, position sensor and seals are renewed rather than cleaned and refitted.
What does the warranty cover, and what does it not?
It covers our work: the parts we fit and the rebuild we carry out on your unit.
What it cannot cover is the vehicle the unit goes back on. If a turbo is destroyed a second time by an oil supply that was never restored, by debris left in the intake after the first failure, or by damage caused during fitting, that is a vehicle problem rather than a rebuild problem — which is exactly why we tell you what to check before the unit goes back on.

Why is a rebuild backed for longer than a used or exchange unit?
Because we know what is inside it. A used turbo carries an unknown history and the same original design weaknesses that took out the one you removed. An exchange unit is somebody else’s rebuild, to a standard you cannot inspect. In both cases the seller is estimating how long it will last, and the length of the warranty shows it.
A rebuild starts from a known condition — measured, not assumed — with new bearings and seals, the failure cause established, and components with a recognised weak point uprated rather than replaced like for like. That is what makes a lifetime term something we can offer rather than a slogan.
What should I do if a problem appears after the unit is refitted?
Stop driving it if there is smoke, a loss of power or an unusual noise. Continuing risks damage to the engine that no turbo warranty covers.
Then get in touch through our contact page with the vehicle details, a description of the symptoms, any fault codes stored, and roughly how long the unit has been fitted. Send the codes themselves rather than an interpretation of them if you can — it is the quickest way for us to work out whether you are looking at the rebuilt unit, the installation, or something on the vehicle that was always going to surface once boost was restored.

How much does an electronic turbo actuator repair cost?
Electronic turbo actuator repairs start from £100. Where a given unit sits depends on what has failed inside it: a worn motor and gear train is a different job from a circuit board fault or a failed position sensor, and some references need parts that are harder to source than others.
The figure is confirmed once the unit is on the bench and we can see which of those it is. Nothing goes ahead until you have agreed it.
When do you quote for a turbocharger rebuild?
After inspection, not before — and the reason is that the price is decided by things nobody can see from the outside.
Two turbochargers with the same part number, off the same engine, can need completely different work. One needs bearings, seals and a clean. The next has wheel damage, a scored shaft or a bearing bore worn beyond serviceable limits. A price quoted before the unit is opened is either padded to cover the worst case or optimistic enough that it changes later, and a price that changes after you have committed is worse than waiting a day for an accurate one.
Once your unit is stripped and measured, you get a figure for the work it actually needs, and you decide from there.
What makes one rebuild cost more than another?
Four things, mostly. What has failed — bearings and seals are a different proposition from a damaged rotating assembly. Whether the core is reclaimable, or whether housings and wheels have to be replaced. Whether it is a plain wastegate turbo or a variable-geometry unit with a vane mechanism and actuator to strip, free and recalibrate. And parts availability for that particular core, which varies considerably between turbo families.
The badge on the vehicle matters far less than people expect. It is the condition of the unit in front of us that sets the work.
Do I have to commit to the repair before you quote?
No. Nothing proceeds until you have seen what we found and agreed a price. If you decide against the work, no parts are fitted and we arrange the return of your unit with you.
Sending a unit in and approving a repair are deliberately separate steps. Sending it in only starts the assessment.
Is a rebuild the right choice compared with a new or used replacement?
Where a core cannot be saved, we say so rather than rebuilding something that will fail again. Where it is sound, a rebuild has one advantage a replacement does not: the cause of the failure gets dealt with.
A new OE unit is built to the same design that has just failed on your engine. A used one carries that design plus an unknown history. A rebuild renews the parts that wear, corrects the mechanism that seized, uprates components with a recognised weakness, and comes back already matched to your vehicle. It also keeps a serviceable casting in service instead of scrapping it, which is the quieter argument for remanufacture over replacement.

Getting the unit to the workshop and back — how to package it, how long it takes, and where we accept units from.
How long does a repair take?
Most repairs are completed within one to two working days of the unit reaching the workshop. Transit time sits on top of that in both directions, so plan around the round trip rather than the bench time alone.
A rebuild that needs a part we do not hold in stock can take longer. Where that applies to your unit we tell you when we quote, so the turnaround is known before you agree the work rather than discovered afterwards.
How should I package the unit, and what should I send with it?
Drain the oil out of the unit first, then blank off the oil feed and return ports and the compressor and turbine openings — tape or plugs are fine. It keeps oil out of the packaging and, more importantly, keeps grit and packing debris out of the housings.
Then pack it properly. A turbocharger is heavy and concentrated in one place: it needs padding on every face and a box that will not burst if it lands on a corner, ideally double-boxed. Use a tracked service, because an untracked parcel cannot be chased.
Include your name and contact details, the vehicle make, model, engine and year, a description of the symptoms with any fault codes, and the reference numbers stamped on the unit’s casing or actuator label. Those references identify the exact variant and remove a round of questions before work starts.
Can I send a unit from anywhere in the UK, or from abroad?
Units reach our Epsom workshop from every part of the UK, and we take work from outside it as well. If you are sending from overseas, get in touch before you post so the arrangements can be confirmed for your country.
