Many of the Nissan models are fitted with the Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump (PSG5) but unfortunately it is known to be a very common failing part. One of the most specific failures that have been found with this part is that it makes the vehicle cut out completely and not start, and this is mostly due to the Hybrid technology behind the design of the Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump.

Here at Sinspeed we take these units in on a daily basis for testing and repairs, and have found that the fault is actually within the Electronic Diesel Control (Unit EDC) and not the mechanical part of the diesel pump. By testing this on our latest diesel pump test rig, it allows for direct communication with the EDC unit to test all functions of the electronic diesel pump. The extensive soak test that is carried out flags out the most common faults as well as highlighting any intermittent faults.

Mitsubishi Colt Clutch Actuator FaultsDoes your Mitsubishi Colt slip out of gears when driving or fail to even select any gears? Or does it sometimes get stuck in neutral? If so, this may be due to a failed Clutch or Gear Actuator.

The Mitsubishi Colt is equipped with an automated manual gearbox which allows it to interchange between manual or automatic at a flick of a button, which is unlike any normal 5 or 6-speed automatics. It operates on sensors and ECU’s which means it does not require a clutch pedal.

The three main components that consist within this type of gearbox include the clutch actuator assembly, a gear shift actuator assembly and a gearbox ECU. Position sensors are placed within each actuator, which allows for signals to be sent back to the gearbox ECU to determine the position of the clutch as well as what gear the vehicle is in. The gearbox ECU then also uses this information as well as the vehicle’s speed and other parameters to calculate the required gear, when the next gear change should take place and when to engage / dis-engage the clutch.

Unfortunately, as many Mitsubishi Colt owners are most likely aware of – this design has been diagnosed with faults that have caused the vehicle to sometimes be left completely immobile!

Common Clutch + Gear Actuator Problems
The most common signs to look out for when diagnosing a faulty clutch or gear actuator on your Mitsubishi Colt are listed below:

  • Slips Out of Gears
  • Gets Stuck In Neutral
  • Fails to Select Gears

Being such a common fault, it is likely you have either a clutch or gear actuator fault and in some cases, it is possible that both actuators have failed together. If you have contacted main dealers already, you will be aware that the price to replace the whole unit can cost in the region of £700 + VAT, which will increase as each actuator will need re-coding to the vehicle. Furthermore, if you opt to replace your unit it will only come with 12 months warranty, and as it is known to be such a common failing part, there is no guarantee that it will not fail again.

Smart Car Gear Actuator Faults

The SMART car transmission is unlike any ordinary 5 or 6-speed automatic. It is an automated manual gearbox. Which means the vehicle can be driven as a manual or automatic at the flick of a button. The vehicle does not have a clutch pedal and instead operates on sensors and ECU’s.

The system consists of a clutch actuator assembly, a gear shift actuator assembly, and a gearbox ECU. Each of the actuators will also have position sensors. Which sends signals back to the gearbox ECU to determine which gear the vehicle is in or what position the clutch is in. This information along with vehicle speed and other parameters will be used by the gearbox ECU. To calculate the required gear, when the next gear change should take place and when to engage/disengage the clutch.

As many SMART car owners are already aware, this design has many faults and can render the vehicle completely un-drivable.

Common Clutch + Gear Actuator Problems

When the clutch and gear actuators fail on the Mercedes Smart car. It doesn’t always give the same symptom. Below we’ve listed the most common fault symptoms we are aware of so far:

Nissan Pixo Teves MK70 ATE ABS ECU Pump FaultsIs your ABS or ESP Light on? Or is your wheel speed sensor faulty? If so, it could be due to a faulty Teves MK70 (ATE) ABS pump that is commonly known to be fitted on the Nissan Pixo.

The Nissan Pixo is fitted with the Teves MK70 (ATE) ABS unit, and has been known to have similar design flaws as the earlier Teves MK60 ATE ABS pump which as many car owners are aware of, turned out to be a complete disaster! Both units have internally built pressure sensors with a low maximum pressure rating and have identical common failures as you can see below:
