You get your own turbo back, not an exchange unit off a shelf. Its core is stripped and measured, rebuilt on genuine OE or uprated components, balanced to specification and run up on the bench before it is boxed — and the rebuild carries a lifetime warranty with no mileage cap.
A failing turbo rarely means the whole unit is scrap. The parts that wear are the parts designed to be renewed — bearings, seals, the variable-vane mechanism, the wastegate linkage — while the housings and castings you have already paid for once are usually sound.
What a Turbo Rebuild Actually Involves
Most turbo repair pages promise a unit will be “fully reconditioned” and leave it at that. This is what happens on the bench.
- Strip-down and failure analysis. The turbo is dismantled to its individual parts — compressor housing, turbine housing and the centre housing rotating assembly (CHRA) that carries the shaft. We establish what caused the failure before deciding what to renew, because a turbo that failed on a contaminated oil feed will fail again if the feed is not dealt with at the same time.
- Cleaning and measurement. Reclaimable castings are blasted and cleaned, and carbon is removed from the turbine end and, on a variable-geometry unit, from the nozzle ring and vane mechanism. Bores, journals and thrust faces are then measured against specification rather than judged by eye.
- Component renewal. Journal bearings, thrust bearing and collar, piston-ring seals, O-rings and circlips are renewed as standard, never refitted. Where the shaft-and-wheel assembly, compressor wheel, nozzle ring or bearing housing is outside tolerance, it is replaced with a genuine OE or OEM-grade part.
- Two-stage balancing. The shaft-and-wheel assembly is balanced on its own, then the fully assembled core is spun to operating speed on a VSR (vibration sorting rig) machine and trimmed until residual vibration is inside limits.
- Boost-control setting and bench test. The wastegate or VNT actuator is checked and the rod length and vane sweep set so the unit delivers the boost the ECU asks for; an incorrectly set actuator throws over-boost and under-boost codes on a mechanically perfect turbo. The finished unit is then run and checked for free rotation, oil-tightness and correct actuator travel before it is packed.
Rebuild or Replace? What the Strip-Down Decides
The honest answer to “can it be saved?” depends on which components are damaged, not on how bad the noise sounds. This is how the common findings usually resolve.

We do not quote before we have seen the unit. Nobody can tell you reliably what a turbo needs from a description of the noise it makes, which is why an accurate figure follows the strip-down rather than preceding it.
What “Reconditioned” Should Mean — and Why Balancing Decides It
Reconditioned, refurbished, remanufactured and serviced are not protected terms in this trade. They can describe a full component-level rebuild, or they can describe a seal kit fitted to a core that was never measured. Two things separate the two.
The first is balancing. A turbo core turns faster than anything else on the engine, riding on an oil film only microns thick. A core that is fractionally out of balance still spins freely by hand and still passes a casual check, but at full speed it loads the journal bearings unevenly, wears them quickly, and comes back with the same shaft play inside a few months. Balancing the wheels before assembly is not the same as VSR-balancing the assembled core — only the second catches the stack-up of every component together.
The second is whether the root cause is corrected rather than reassembled. Where a design weakness is known on a particular unit — a wastegate pivot that wears oval, a vane mechanism that cokes up on short journeys — the rebuild addresses it instead of putting the same failure back on the car.
Symptoms: Is It the Turbo or the Actuator?
- Loss of power, often with the vehicle dropping into limp mode
- A whistle or siren that rises with engine speed, or a rattle on spool-up
- Blue smoke on acceleration, from oil passing the compressor seal
- Rising oil consumption with no external leak
- Over-boost or under-boost fault codes stored with little else to show for it
That last one matters. On a modern variable-geometry diesel, boost faults are as often the electronic actuator as the turbo itself: worn motor gears or a failed position sensor will stop the vanes reaching commanded position while the core is in perfect health. How the Mail-In Service Works
- Remove the turbo. The service is mail-in, so the unit needs to be off the vehicle. If you are not doing that yourself, your local garage can handle the removal and the refit.
- Pack it properly. The wheels are the vulnerable part in transit. Blank the ports, wrap the unit, and use a rigid box with plenty of padding around the compressor and turbine ends.

- Strip, rebuild, balance, test. Typically two to three working days on the bench once the unit arrives.
- Your unit comes back. Because it is your own turbo rebuilt to specification rather than an exchange unit, there is no coding or adaptation to arrange — it refits and runs.
On refit, renew or thoroughly flush the oil feed pipe, fit new gaskets, change the engine oil and filter, and prime the turbo with clean oil before the first start. Oil starvation in the first seconds of running is one of the most common causes of a repeat failure. What the Lifetime Warranty Covers — and What It Does Not
Every turbo rebuild is covered by a lifetime warranty with no mileage cap. That is worth stating plainly, because turbo warranties in this trade commonly run 12 to 24 months and are often capped at around 12,000 miles a year.
It covers our workmanship and the parts we fitted. If a bearing, seal or wheel we installed fails, the unit comes back in and is put right. What it cannot cover, and what no turbo warranty realistically can:
- Oil starvation or a restricted oil feed — the cause originates in the engine, not in the turbo
- Contaminated oil, extended service intervals, or oil of the wrong specification
- Foreign-object damage drawn in through the intake or fed in from the exhaust side
- Over-boost from a remap or from a boost-control fault left uncorrected
- Damage caused at refit, including running the engine before the turbo has oil pressure
Those exclusions are standard across the industry. We set them out here rather than in small print, because knowing them is what prevents the second failure.

How long does a turbo rebuild take?
Typically two to three working days from the unit arriving at the workshop. A complex variable-geometry turbo, or one needing a part on order, can take longer — we tell you if that applies to yours.
What does a turbo rebuild cost?
It depends entirely on what the strip-down finds, so the figure follows the assessment. For context, remanufactured replacement turbochargers for common UK diesels are typically listed in the region of £300 to £650 by trade suppliers, with brand-new units higher again. Rebuilding the unit you already own keeps the housings and castings you have paid for once already, which is why it is usually the cheaper route.
Can you tell me what is wrong before I send it in?
Not with any honesty. Symptoms and fault codes narrow it down, but shaft play, bearing wear and vane condition can only be judged with the core stripped and measured. Anyone quoting a firm price over a description is guessing.
Will my ECU need coding after the rebuild?
No. You get your original turbo back with its own actuator set up on our bench, so it goes on as a direct refit with no programming or dealer visit required.
Is a rebuilt turbo as reliable as a new one?
When it is rebuilt to specification, yes — new bearings and seals, in-tolerance wheels and a balanced core give you a unit performing to the original design. Where that design had a known weak point, a rebuild that addresses it can outlast the part it replaced.
What actually makes turbos fail?
Oil is behind most of it: starvation from a blocked or collapsed feed, contamination from long service intervals, and coking after a hot shutdown. Beyond that, carbon build-up on the VNT vanes of short-journey diesels, foreign-object damage, and sustained over-boost account for the majority of what reaches our bench.
