On the 1.6 HDi in particular the turbocharger is usually the casualty rather than the cause: the fault sits in the engine’s oil supply, and a replacement fitted to an untouched oil supply fails the same way.
Nearly every Citroen turbo that arrives here is rebuildable; only a cracked housing, or wheel damage bad enough to lose the geometry, rules one out.
If your Citroen is on its second turbocharger, there is a fair chance nothing was seriously wrong with either of them. On the 1.6 HDi especially, the turbo is the component that dies for a fault living somewhere else — in the oil feed pipe, in the fine gauze strainer inside that circuit, in the pick-up screen at the bottom of the sump, or in the condition of the oil itself. Bolt a rebuilt turbo onto an untouched oil supply and you have bought a few thousand miles, not a repair.

Which Citroen Turbocharger Are You Dealing With?

Citroen fitted turbochargers from several suppliers across its diesel range, and the badge on the boot will not tell you which one is on your car. The engine code narrows it down; the plate on the turbocharger settles it.
1.4 HDi, the DV4 engines. C1, C2, C3 and Nemo carry small fixed-geometry KKK-type units under KP35 and K35 numbers such as 5435-970-0021 and 5435-970-0007.
1.6 HDi, the DV6 engines. The one most owners arrive here for, and it splits in two. The 92bhp DV6UTED4 cars — C3, C4 and the Relay van — carry a Mitsubishi TD025-family unit under numbers running from 49173-07502 through to 49173-07527. The 108–110bhp DV6TED4 cars — C3, C4, C5 and the Xsara Picasso — carry a Garrett GT1544V on base numbers 753420 and 762328. The V is not decoration: in Garrett’s own designation convention it flags a variable nozzle turbine, a ring of moving vanes around the turbine wheel. The Mitsubishi unit is a different design with different boost-control hardware. Establish which of the two you have before you read any advice about sticking vanes, because half of it will not apply to your car.
2.0 HDi, the DW10 engines. Berlingo, Xsara, Xantia, C5, C8, Dispatch, Relay and Jumper. The early 90–110bhp cars run Garrett GT1546S units on 706976, 706977 and 706978, or KKK K03 units on 5303-970- numbers. The later 136bhp DW10BTED4S runs a Garrett GT1749V on 756047, and the DW10C engines run GTB1449VZL 783248 and GT1449V 792623. Notice which of those carry a V and which do not, because it changes what can go wrong.
2.2 HDi, 2.8 HDi and the older XUD cars. The 2.2 units in the C5, C8, C6 and Evasion are Garrett GT1549P on 706006, 726683 and 707240; the 2.8 Relay and Jumper vans run K03 5303-970-0081 and 49377-07050. The XUD-engined BX, ZX, Xantia, XM and Dispatch turbos — K14, K04, TB and GT1549 units — are all still rebuildable, and on most of them a rebuild is now the only sensible route, because new stock has become scarce.
The 1.6 HDi Turbo Failure Is an Oil Supply Failure

Most of the Citroen turbo failures reaching a UK workshop come from one engine family, and on that family the turbocharger is almost never the part that went wrong first.
What actually starves the bearing
A turbocharger bearing does not run metal on metal. The shaft floats on a pressurised film of engine oil, and that film is the only thing between a shaft turning at well over a hundred thousand revolutions per minute and the housing around it. Interrupt the oil for a moment and the film collapses. Interrupt it repeatedly and the bearing wears until the shaft has measurable play and the wheels begin touching their housings.
On the DV6, oil reaches the turbo through a slim feed pipe with a fine gauze strainer in the circuit. The strainer is there to keep debris out of the bearing, and it does that job well — right up until it stops passing oil. Soot and oxidised oil bake onto the gauze, the aperture closes, and flow drops below what the bearing needs. Nothing warns the driver, because the oil pressure light is watching the main gallery, not the last few centimetres of pipe feeding the turbocharger.
Short journeys never get the oil hot enough to drive off moisture and fuel. Particulate filter regeneration injects extra fuel late in the cycle, and some of it washes past the rings into the sump. A long service interval then leaves that degraded oil circulating for longer than the pipe will tolerate.
Why the replacement fails too
Fitting a new turbo does nothing whatsoever to the feed pipe or the strainer. If the restriction was severe enough to kill the first unit, it is still there when the second one goes on, and that unit begins its life on the same starved supply. It is not a turbo quality question, and no warranty on the turbocharger alone protects you from it.
The drain side matters just as much. Oil has to leave the bearing housing as fast as it arrives, and it leaves under gravity rather than pressure. A return pipe narrowed by carbon backs the oil up, pressure rises inside the centre housing, and oil is pushed past the seals. That is where most blue smoke comes from, and new seals will not cure it if the unit goes back onto a restricted drain.
What Actually Fails Inside a Citroen Turbocharger

Bearings and shaft. Starvation and contamination both end here. Journal surfaces wear, the shaft gains radial and axial play, and eventually a wheel contacts its housing. This is measurable on the bench, and it is what decides whether a core is worth rebuilding.
Seals and oil carry-over. The piston-ring type seals at each end of the shaft depend on the pressure balance across them staying sensible. Lose that balance — through a restricted drain, a blocked crankcase breather, or worn bearings letting the shaft move — and oil passes into the intake. If enough of it collects in the intercooler and boost pipes, a diesel can draw it in and keep running on it independently of the fuel supply. That is why a smoking turbo is not a wait-and-see fault, and why the pipework has to be cleaned out before a rebuilt unit goes on.
Vane and nozzle-ring carbon. On the units carrying a V — GT1544V, GT1749V, GTB1449VZL — soot builds around the vane pivots until the vanes stiffen or seize. The engine then cannot hold the boost it commands, and the symptoms swing between too much and too little.
Boost-control hardware and heat damage. The mechanism moving the vanes or the wastegate can fail on its own and presents almost identically to a failed turbo; if yours is an electronic module rather than a vacuum can, see our turbo actuator repairs. Turbine housings also crack, and anything shed upstream arrives at the compressor wheel at full shaft speed.
Citroen Turbo Symptoms, and What Each One Narrows Down
An anti-pollution fault message. On a PSA-built car a stored emissions-relevant fault often surfaces on the dash as an anti-pollution or depollution warning. It is a catch-all: it tells you the engine control unit has logged something it considers emissions-related, which includes boost faults and a long list of things that are nothing to do with the turbo. Read the stored codes; do not read the message as a diagnosis.
Blue or grey smoke, worst when the boost comes in or on the overrun, points at oil crossing the turbo seals — and so at the drain, the breathers and the bearings rather than the wheels.
Black smoke with lost power is fuel without the air to burn it: under-boost. On a variable-nozzle unit that is often a stiff vane mechanism, and it is very often a split hose or a loose clip on the pressure side.
Noise. A whistle rising smoothly with boost is more often a leak than a turbo. A metallic siren, or a grinding whine that changes pitch with engine speed, is the rotating assembly and needs the unit off.
Limp mode that clears on a restart and returns under load suggests a control fault rather than a mechanically destroyed turbocharger. Making the Repair Hold: What Has to Happen on the Car

We can return a turbocharger to as-new condition and it will still fail if it goes back onto the supply that killed the last one. This part of the job happens in your garage rather than ours, and on a 1.6 HDi it is not optional.
- Renew the oil feed pipe complete with its strainer. There is no version of this job where the gauze is cleaned — you cannot see whether it has cleared, and a partly cleared strainer starves the bearing as effectively as a blocked one.
- Renew the oil return pipe rather than refitting one narrowed by carbon.
- Drop the sump, clean it out and replace the oil pick-up. The pick-up carries its own mesh screen, and it blocks the same way — which drops pressure to the whole engine, not only the turbo.
- Clean the breather system and renew the breather filters. A blocked crankcase breather raises case pressure and pushes oil past the turbo seals.
- Clean out the oil filter housing and fit a new filter.
- Flush the intercooler and boost pipework so oil and debris from the failed unit cannot be drawn back into the engine.
- Fill with fresh oil to the specification in your handbook. On the particulate-filter cars that means a low-SAPS oil, and it is not a free choice.
- Prime the turbo with clean oil before the first start and let the engine idle rather than revving it, so the bearing has a film before it takes any load.
Whatever interval the car has been serviced on, this engine family responds to a shorter one. The oil is the turbocharger’s only bearing surface.
Citroen Turbo Part Numbers and Fitment

Find your engine code and bhp figure first, then check the part number shown against the one stamped on the plate on your own unit — that is the number which decides everything downstream. Treat the table as a shortlist to verify rather than a fitment guarantee: references supersede over time, and several Citroen numbers differ only in a final digit.

What to Send Us, and What to Tell Us
Send the complete turbocharger, boost-control hardware included, packed so nothing can move inside the box. Leave it as it came off the engine: do not strip it, and do not clean the plate.
Tell us the registration, the model and engine, the engine code if you have it, every reference readable on the plate, and the mileage. Then tell us what the car was doing when the fault appeared, whether it dropped into limp mode, whether a restart cleared it, what colour the smoke was, and any codes that were stored. Say whether the oil feed pipe and strainer have already been changed, and when the oil was last done — that last answer changes the diagnosis more often than any other.

Why did my Citroen turbo fail when the car has low mileage?
On the 1.6 HDi, mileage is rarely the deciding factor — oil condition and oil flow are. A car doing short journeys on a long service interval degrades its oil faster than one covering motorway miles, and the gauze strainer in the turbo feed circuit blocks on the results. A low-mileage failure usually means the supply was restricted, not that the turbo was faulty.
Can a 1.6 HDi turbo be rebuilt, or does it have to be replaced?
The overwhelming majority are rebuildable. Bearings, seals, the shaft and wheel assembly and the vane mechanism are all serviceable. What rules a core out is a cracked housing, or wheel damage severe enough that the geometry has gone. We tell you which of those you have after the strip, not before it.
What else has to be changed when a 1.6 HDi turbo is done?
At minimum the oil feed pipe with its strainer, the oil return pipe, the sump pick-up, the breather filters, the oil filter and the oil itself, plus a flush of the intercooler and boost pipework. Skipping the feed pipe is the commonest reason a second turbo fails on these engines.
My Citroen shows an anti-pollution fault. Is that the turbo?
Not necessarily. It is a catch-all dash message for an emissions-relevant fault stored by the engine control unit, and boost faults are only one of the things that trigger it. Have the stored codes read before anything is condemned, and note whether the message clears on a restart.
Do I send the whole turbocharger or just the boost actuator?
If the fault is bearing wear, smoke or shaft play, the turbocharger has to come off. If the vanes sweep freely by hand and the fault sits in an electronic boost-control module bolted to the outside, that module can travel on its own and the turbo stays on the engine. How do I find the part number on my Citroen turbo?
Look for a stamped or riveted plate on the compressor housing, the flat cover on the intake side. It carries the manufacturer’s base number — a Garrett six-digit number, a Mitsubishi 49173- number, a KKK 5303-970- number — and often a Citroen reference beginning 96 alongside it. Photograph the whole plate rather than transcribing part of it.
How long does a rebuild take, and what warranty comes with it?
K03-family units are typically two to three working days from arrival at the workshop, plus postage each way; other families are confirmed once the unit has been assessed. Every turbocharger rebuild carries a lifetime, unlimited-mileage warranty — no time limit and no mileage cap.
Final Thoughts
A Citroen turbo failure is easy to read as a component that let you down, and on the older XUD and 2.0 HDi cars it often is exactly that: a bearing that has done its work and worn out. On the 1.6 HDi it usually is not. There the turbocharger is the most expensive part in a chain of cheap ones, and it is simply the part that shows the damage first.
That distinction decides how the job should be quoted and how it should be done. A rebuilt turbocharger is worth having only if the pipe feeding it, the drain leaving it and the oil going through it are all put right at the same time.
