Which A4 B8 Is Actually a K03 Car?
One model name, two engine families and two entirely different turbochargers: on a B8 A4 the badge is not the specification, and what fits is decided by the engine in front of it rather than the name on the back.
The K03 is the factory turbocharger of the 2.0 TFSI petrol engine, the EA888 in its first and second generations. Most A4 B8s on UK roads are diesels, and the 2.0 TDI is not a K03 car at all — it runs a variable-geometry Garrett, a different unit entirely.
The petrol range divides too. When the B8 was facelifted, European cars moved to the third-generation EA888, which does not use a K03 either — it carries an IHI-type turbocharger with the exhaust manifold cast into it. A listing headed 2007–2015 describes a production run rather than a part, and its later years include cars this turbocharger has no business on.
Settling it does not need a part number. If the turbine housing and the exhaust manifold are a single casting, you are on the later engine and this is the wrong listing; if the turbocharger came off as its own component on a separate manifold, you are in K03 territory. What Fails on a 2.0 TFSI K03, and What You Hear First
This is a wastegated turbocharger: no vane mechanism inside, no electronic actuator on the side, so most of what is written about variable-geometry diesel failure does not describe it. The faults are heat, wear and oil faults, and each announces itself differently.

Boost codes on their own — P0299 or P0234 with no noise alongside — are worth a pipework pressure test first: a split hose reads the same way for a fraction of the work. The oil feed matters more than any of it. The feed carbons up internally, the return restricts, and a starved bearing will fail again however well the unit was rebuilt, so renew those lines while the turbo is off the car. A rebuild here is a measurement job before it is a parts job. Your unit comes apart to its last component and is measured, and the wear parts are renewed to genuine OE or OEM-grade specification, uprated where the original design is what put it on the bench. The rotating assembly is balanced, the wastegate set, and the turbocharger run up and tested before it is boxed.
Rebuilding Yours, or Fitting a Used One From a Later Car
The usual alternative is a low-mileage second-hand unit. It exchanges a known failure for an unknown one: a used turbocharger has run the same wear mechanisms as yours, and it arrives with no measurement behind it.
The second problem is the one this page opened with: a turbocharger pulled from a 2014 or 2015 car may well have come off the third-generation engine, which is not this turbocharger. Bolting onto somebody else’s car is not a fitment standard when one model name covers two designs.
The labour is the same either way. Getting a turbocharger off a B8 and back on is the long part of this job, and the one component whose fitment is already beyond argument is the one that came off your own engine. Rebuilding it also keeps a sound casting in service instead of scrapping it for a replacement with the same design weakness.
