What This Listing Covers

The Discovery 3 was sold with more than one engine, and the turbocharger on the 2.7 TDV6 is not shared with the rest of them. Nine descriptions of one component, none of them defined anywhere on the page it appears.

The prices behave accordingly. One catalogue alone offers this part between roughly £300 and £1,800, and the condition bands overlap rather than forming a ladder: the cheapest unit listed is a new one, while units described as remanufactured run to three and four times that. Whatever separates those figures, it is not condition — condition is the thing nobody has stated.

One supplier lists the same Land Rover reference twice, at about £1,024 before VAT as genuine OEM and about £397 as reconditioned. Same number, same seller, nothing between them but a suffix on the stock code.

A price can also carry an obligation that is not in the figure. One reconditioned unit here is strictly exchange: the old turbocharger goes back within fourteen days, in one piece, at the buyer’s cost. Crack a housing getting it off and the price you compared was never the price you were going to pay.

The Catalogues Do Not Agree on How the Vanes Are Moved

Every catalogue that describes this turbocharger technically calls it variable geometry — VNT, VTG or plain “variable geometry”, depending on who wrote the entry. A ring of movable vanes in the turbine housing changes the angle of the gas onto the wheel.

What those same catalogues cannot agree on is what moves the ring. On one vehicle page, for one car, some units are listed with a pneumatically controlled actuator, some with an electrically controlled actuator, and one is described only as electronic. Those are different parts with different failure modes, and they read alike from the driver’s seat — boost that overshoots, boost that never arrives, limp mode on a hill. The unit in front of an engineer answers it in seconds. A product page cannot.

How Many Turbochargers Your Engine Carries Is Not Something This Page Can Tell You

Every seller on this search lists one part for this vehicle, at one price, with no side or bank designation on it. A catalogue lists a part; it does not state an installation.

Suppliers do designate sides where their own data supports it — on the later 3.0 diesel there are primary and secondary units, separately numbered and separately priced. Nothing equivalent appears against the 2.7, and we are not going to read a layout off that silence and print it here as fact.

So this page will not tell you how many units your engine carries, or which one has failed. That is settled at the vehicle, from the stored fault data and from what is in front of whoever has it on a ramp. If more than one unit is coming to us, say so in the box and we will book them in together.

What Actually Wears Out Inside One of These

A turbocharger core is a shaft spinning on a film of pressurised oil, with a compressor wheel at one end and a turbine wheel at the other. Nearly everything that goes wrong follows from that film — its pressure, its cleanliness, or how long it takes to arrive after a cold start.

As the journals and thrust faces wear, the shaft moves where it should not. Radial play lets the wheel tips touch their housings; axial play lets oil past the seals into the intake tract. You get a whine that climbs with load, oil consumption with no puddle to explain it, or smoke on boost.

The variable-geometry mechanism ages more quietly. Soot builds on the vane pivots until the ring stiffens — often with no noise and no smoke at all, only boost that no longer matches what was asked for.

Your turbocharger is booked in under your name and stripped to component level before anything is ordered for it. Every wear surface is measured, and those measurements — not a description, not a grade, not a price band — decide what is renewed and what is sound.

Worn components go back in to genuine OE or OEM-grade specification, uprated where the original design is the reason the unit reached the bench. The variable-geometry mechanism is cleaned back and worked through its full travel, the rotating assembly balanced, and the finished unit tested before it is packed.

Packing It, Posting It and Putting It Back On

Send it complete, with its boost-control components still attached, and tape or plug every port and flange. It is a heavy parcel — our listing puts it at around 11 kg packed — so use a box that will take the weight.

Put a note in with it: your name, the car, the mileage the fault appeared at, whether it came on gradually or all at once, and any codes that were read. The turbocharger will tell us what has worn; it cannot tell us what was happening at the time, and that is frequently what identifies the cause.

On refitting, renew the oil feed and return lines rather than cleaning them — a pipe that has carbonised internally will not come clean, and a core running on a restricted supply wears out however well it was built. Prime the feed before the engine fires so a freshly rebuilt bearing does not start dry.
