Two Different Actuators Are Fitted Under One Model Name

A turbocharger actuator does one job: it moves an arm on the outside of the turbo to a position the engine wants. There are two entirely different ways of building something that does that, and the Mondeo has been sold with both.

The vacuum actuator is the older arrangement — a sealed steel can containing a spring and a rubber diaphragm, with a pushrod out of one face and a small-bore pipe into the other. Engine vacuum pulls the diaphragm against its spring, and a solenoid valve elsewhere in the bay decides how much vacuum reaches it. No motor, no gearing, nothing that reports back: it goes where the vacuum puts it.

The electronic actuator replaced it. It is a moulded plastic body on an aluminium base with a multi-pin connector, and inside are a small direct-current motor, a reduction gear train, a position sensor and a circuit board. The engine control unit commands a position and the unit reports back where the arm actually reached, several times a second, for the life of the car.

That difference decides everything that follows. The vacuum type fails at a diaphragm, a pipe or a solenoid, and is diagnosed with a hand vacuum pump. The electronic type fails at a motor, a gear train, a sensor or a board, and is rebuilt at component level. Neither repair helps the other car.

Pipe or Plug? Identifying Yours on the Turbocharger

This needs no diagnostic tool and nothing has to come off. You need light and a clear view of the turbocharger, which sits on the exhaust side of the engine with the down-pipe running off it.

Follow the turbo housing round until you find the small unit bracketed to its outside, with a short arm or rod linking it to a lever on the housing. That is the actuator. Then look at what is connected to it:

  • A thin rubber or plastic pipe, roughly the diameter of a pencil, and no wiring at all — a vacuum actuator. The body is a shallow round or oval steel can, usually crimped around its rim, and light in the hand.
  • A multi-pin electrical plug with a latch, and no pipe — an electronic actuator. The body is moulded plastic with a black top cover on an aluminium base, noticeably deeper and heavier than a vacuum can.

There is no ambiguity between the two once you are looking at the right part. The mistake owners make is not misreading the actuator — it is never looking at it, and buying from the model name instead.

What to photograph while the torch is out

On the electronic type the references sit on two separate faces and you want both: the Hella part number is printed on the black top cover, and the shorter G-code is marked on the aluminium side of the body. Wipe the housing, photograph both, and photograph the plate on the turbocharger itself if you can reach it. Send all three with the unit and nobody has to guess what arrived.

If Yours Is the Vacuum Type, This Is Not an Actuator Rebuild

Say a pipe goes into a steel can and no wire goes near it. Nothing on this page about motors, gear trains and position feedback describes your car, and an electronic actuator repair is the wrong service to be buying.

What fails on that arrangement is a short list, and most of it is not the can. The vacuum supply can be weak. The pipe perishes, splits at a union, or collapses where it has been chafing. The solenoid that meters the vacuum can stick or fail electrically. And the diaphragm inside the can eventually splits, at which point it no longer holds vacuum and the rod stops moving to position.

Most of that is cheap to find. A hand vacuum pump applied to the actuator shows whether the rod moves smoothly through its travel and whether the can holds the vacuum you put into it — if it bleeds off, the diaphragm has gone. If the can holds and the rod moves freely, the fault is upstream in the supply, the pipework or the solenoid.

What Actually Fails on Each Type

The two parts share a mounting point and a job. They share almost nothing else, including how they die.

Read the electronic column slowly, because three of those four failures leave the unit looking and sounding alive. A motor goes marginal long before it goes dead. A gear train with rounded teeth lets the motor spin freely while the arm barely moves. A worn position sensor reports a position the arm is not in, with everything else about the unit perfect. Only the fractured board joint behaves like an obvious electrical fault. Why the Symptoms Cannot Tell the Two Apart

A Mondeo with a boost-control problem behaves the same way whichever actuator it has, and the reason is straightforward: the control unit is watching the result, not the mechanism.

What owners report is consistent. The glow-plug light starts flashing and the engine management light comes on. The car drops into limp mode, which restricts fuelling to protect the engine, so the power goes and does not return until the ignition has been cycled. There may be smoke on acceleration. On many cars the fault starts as an occasional thing, stays away for days, then arrives more often and eventually stops going away at all.

Every one of those is a description of boost that missed its target. A split vacuum diaphragm produces it. A stripped gear train in an electronic unit produces it. So does a mechanism too stiff for either type to move, and so does a hole in the pipework a metre from the turbocharger. The symptoms establish that the boost-control system is in trouble; they do not establish which part type you own, and certainly not which component inside it failed.

P132A and P132B, and What the Descriptions Disagree About

What Ford Mondeo turbo actuator fault codes P132A, P132B and the boost outcome codes P0234, P0299 and P2263 actually tell you, and what they do not

These are the two codes a Mondeo owner is most often handed, and they come with a quirk. On a great many scanners they are returned as unknown, because they sit outside the generic code set the tool carries descriptions for — the reader displays the number and no text, or falls back to a general turbocharger boost control fault or performance message.

The published descriptions are not consistent either. P132A is recorded by specialists as a turbocharger boost control code, and elsewhere as a turbo actuator vane code; P132B is generally recorded as turbo boost control ‘A’ performance. Alongside them a basic reader will frequently return P0234, P0299 or P2263 — overboost, underboost and boost system performance. Those three are outcome codes: they confirm the engine did not get the boost it asked for, and say nothing about why.

One thing the code set does tell you, and it is the useful part. A vacuum actuator has no sensor and no electrical connection, so there is nothing for the control unit to log about its position. An electronic system can report a disagreement between the position it was commanded to reach and the position it says it reached — so the presence of position-related data is itself evidence about which architecture you have.

What no code on either system does is name the component that failed. The Second-Hand Actuator

Used electronic actuators for the Mondeo are easy to find, and the reasoning behind buying one is easy to follow. It is worth being clear about what actually arrives.

A second-hand unit contains the same four things that wear: motor brushes, gear teeth, a position-sensor track and soldered board joints. It has been through an unknown number of cycles on a car with an unknown history, in the same heat and vibration yours has lived in. None of that wear shows in a photograph and there is no bench test behind it — you are buying the same design at an unknown point on the same wear curve.

There is a second trap that belongs specifically to this page. A listing headed with a model name may be either type of part, and photographs are often taken from an angle where the connector or the pipe stub is out of frame. A vacuum can bought for a car with an electrical plug is unusable, and a return argument is a poor use of a fortnight.

A rebuild avoids both problems for a reason that has nothing to do with sales copy: the unit that comes back is the one already bolted to your turbocharger, so its fitment was never in question and its travel already belongs to that turbo. What changes is that the worn components inside it are new.

Air Leaks, a Jammed Mechanism and a Blocked Exhaust

Three causes to rule out before posting a Ford Mondeo turbo actuator: air leaks in the charge pipework, a soot-jammed vane mechanism, and a blocked exhaust raising back-pressure

Three things under-deliver boost on a Mondeo without any actuator being at fault, and all three are worth eliminating before a part is posted anywhere.

Air leaks. The pipework between turbocharger, intercooler and inlet runs at pressure and is joined by hoses and clamps that harden and split with age. A cracked hose or a clamp that has crept lets boost escape before it reaches the engine, and the control unit stores exactly the outcome codes a failing actuator would produce. Work along the charge pipework and look at the bends and every joint.

A jammed mechanism. On a variable-nozzle turbocharger, soot and carbon accumulate on the vane mechanism over a long life of short journeys and stiffen the ring the arm has to swivel. A healthy actuator strains against that resistance until its gear train or motor gives way — which is why a stiff mechanism destroys a new unit as surely as it destroyed the old one. With the actuator unbolted, sweep the arm through its full travel by hand: free movement means the mechanism is moving; binding or refusal means the job is inside the turbine housing and sits with our turbocharger repair and rebuild service.

A blocked exhaust. A restricted catalytic converter or a loaded particulate filter raises back-pressure on the turbine side, and the turbocharger cannot make its target boost against it. A different fault presenting as the same lost power, and worth ruling out before an actuator is condemned.

How do I tell whether my Mondeo has a vacuum or an electronic turbo actuator?

The Mondeo has been on sale long enough, in enough diesel variants, that the model name has stopped being a specification.
