Why Almost Every Actuator You Find Is Catalogued Against a Grand Cherokee
The Commander and the Grand Cherokee of the same era were sold alongside each other with the same 3.0 CRD V6. The Grand Cherokee sold in volume across Europe; the Commander did not. Suppliers catalogue the part they shift, so the listings, the reference tables and the repair pages all accumulate under the other name.
You can see the effect in the trade’s own catalogues. The opposite failure is just as common. Another specialist does list the Commander — on a single repair listing that also covers Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler across series spanning 2001 to 2022, above a block of thirteen separate part-number sets. Nothing on that page maps any one reference set to any one model or year. Buy from it and you have bought a repair for “a Jeep”, not for your Jeep.
None of that is a reason to distrust the parts. The engine really is shared, and a unit catalogued under Mercedes or Dodge genuinely can be the right one. It is a reason to distrust the names, and to work from the numbers instead.

On a variable-nozzle turbocharger there is no wastegate for it to open: the arm swivels a ring of vanes inside the turbine housing, changing the area the exhaust gas is forced through so boost arrives early at low engine speed and is held to target as flow rises. That matters for identification as well as for accuracy, because a wastegate actuator and a nozzle-ring actuator are asked for different travel.
The Four Identifiers That Decide Fitment — and the Sets Recorded Against a Jeep

Wipe the casing, take a torch to it, and you will normally find more than one number. Supplier cross-references quote them in combination, and the combination is what identifies the unit. Four families turn up.
- The Hella part number, in the form 6NW nnn nnn. It names the actuator family, and a family can cover many vehicles across several manufacturers.

- If only one identifier is legible, ask rather than order. Photograph the housing from both sides and send the images with your registration. A partial match is the most common reason a part arrives, bolts on, and does not cure the car.

1. One listing, seven models, thirteen reference sets. Composite repair listings cover a whole marque on one page. Specialist listings titled for one Jeep carry “Fits W211” — a Mercedes chassis code — in the same line, because that is where the family is most often sold. 3. Fault codes your Commander cannot store. Repair listings often print one shared code block across every vehicle the seller covers, so Mercedes-format codes such as 2510-001 and Ford codes such as P132A and P132B appear on a page about a Jeep. What your vehicle stores are the boost codes — most often P0046, printed in catalogues as a bare “0046 – Control Circuit Performance”, along with P0299 underboost, P0234 overboost and the less specific P2263.
4. An electronic unit bought for a vacuum turbocharger, or the reverse. Both are stocked for Jeeps and both are described as turbo actuators. The connector settles it in two seconds, and it is worth those two seconds.
5. Exchange terms that quietly take away your evidence. Reconditioned units are typically supplied on a deposit exchange, or on the basis that you send yours in first. Read which one you are agreeing to: under an exchange, the unit that leaves your possession is the only one whose fitment to your turbocharger is already proven.

Is It the Actuator, or What the Actuator Drives?
Identification is only half of what has to be right. On this engine the actuator is frequently the casualty rather than the cause: soot and oil bake onto the nozzle-ring vanes, the mechanism stiffens, and the actuator is commanded against it thousands of times a journey until its gear teeth strip or its motor gives up. Fit a perfect unit to a stiff nozzle ring and it is loaded on day one exactly as the old one was.
