The CLK is unusual among the Mercedes diesels for how much hides behind one model name. Across the W209 / C209 run the badge sat on a 2.2-litre four-cylinder, a 2.7-litre five-cylinder and a 3.0-litre V6. Three engines, three different turbochargers, three different actuator families — and one shared reason for arriving on this page.

That matters more than it sounds. Almost every listing you will find online is written for “Mercedes CLK”, which is not a specification. A unit catalogued against a CLK may have come off an engine you do not have. So the useful starting point is not the badge on the boot but the engine in front of you, and then the references moulded into the actuator’s own casing.

Read that table for what it is: the references catalogued against each engine, not a promise about your particular car. Mercedes also used vacuum-operated actuators across this era, and specialist catalogues list several G-codes against a single engine family. The unit in your hand settles it and nothing else does.

Where to look, and what the short codes mean

The references are on the plastic top section of the actuator, on the face turned away from the turbocharger, and they usually need a wipe and a torch before they will read. Expect two useful numbers: a Hella reference beginning 6NW, and a base number — on CLK units that is most often 712120.

You will also find shorter markings such as H-48 or 25086 L2. These sit alongside the Hella reference rather than replacing it, and on their own they will not identify the unit. If those short codes are the only legible markings left on your casing, photograph the label and send it in with your registration rather than guessing from it.

One correction worth making

You will see these units described as CLK wastegate actuators. On the CLK diesels they are not. The turbochargers are variable-nozzle designs: the actuator drives a ring of pivoting vanes in the turbine housing, changing the angle the exhaust gas meets the turbine wheel rather than dumping gas past it. It matters practically, because it explains why the actuator fails at all — a wastegate flap that sticks is a nuisance, whereas a nozzle ring that stiffens with carbon slowly loads up the small motor whose job is to move it.

How a CLK Actuator Fails, and the Order It Happens In

These faults rarely arrive all at once. They follow a sequence, and where you are in that sequence tells you a good deal about what is going on inside the unit.

First, an occasional flat spot when the engine is hot. Nothing on the dashboard, no stored code you would notice — just an overtake that did not happen after an hour on a motorway. Warm-running onset is characteristic: heat is what tips a marginal motor, a worn sensor track or a fatigued joint from working to not working.

Then the engine management light and a genuine loss of power. The car feels heavy, will not pull past mid-range, and often clears completely after being switched off and restarted. Owners frequently drive like this for weeks, because everything is normal again the following morning.

Then limp mode, and shorter and shorter intervals between episodes. This is the part worth paying attention to. Limp mode is not the fault; it is the control unit’s response to the gap between the boost it commanded and the boost it measured growing past what it will tolerate. When the interval between limp-mode events halves, and halves again, the unit is not going to recover on its own.

Finally it stops clearing, and the arm stops moving. Permanent low boost, reduced revs, a fault that returns the moment it is erased. An operating arm that does not move on start-up is the most conclusive symptom on the list — though on its own it still does not tell you whether the actuator has stopped driving or whether what it drives has seized.

Smoke on acceleration, alongside any of the above. The engine is being fuelled for boost it is not receiving, and the surplus leaves as soot. Where a particulate filter is fitted, that soot has somewhere to go and it is not a good place.

What Your CLK Stores, and What a Generic Reader Shows Instead

On Mercedes-specific equipment the code you will almost always see is 2510 – Boost Pressure Control, sometimes written 2510-001. It is worth being clear about what that says: the control unit did not get the boost pressure it asked for. That describes the system, not the component. It does not separate a failed actuator from a seized nozzle ring, a leaking intake pipe or a boost pressure sensor reading badly.

A generic OBD-II reader often cannot see the Mercedes-side code at all and returns the manufacturer-independent equivalent instead — P0299 underboost, P0234 overboost, P2263 boost system performance. Same information, less of it.

On a three-engine model the code has a second limitation that is easy to miss: it is identical across all three CLK diesels. Nothing in a 2510 tells you whether the actuator you are chasing is a 727461-family unit off a 2.2, a 727463 off the 2.7, or a 6NW009420 off the V6.

Two observations are worth more than the code number, so record them before anything is disturbed. First, whether the fault stays stored or clears on an ignition cycle — and if it clears, roughly how long the engine runs before it comes back. Second, what the car was doing when it appeared: cold or thoroughly warm, under load or cruising. Send those in with the unit and they get read against what the bench test finds.

Is It the Actuator, or Is It the Turbocharger?

Two entirely different faults produce the same symptoms and the same stored code, and they are not comparable jobs. One unbolts and goes in the post. The other means the turbocharger comes off the engine.

Check the electrical side first. Before condemning anything, inspect the actuator’s connector for corrosion or a damaged seal, confirm it is fully latched, and check the supply and earth at the plug along with the fuse that feeds it — use the fuse chart for your own car rather than a figure from a forum, because the layout differs by build. A connector full of green is a cheaper morning than a rebuild.

Then watch the arm. With the engine running, have the arm observed as the engine is revved. On a healthy system it moves as the vanes are commanded. If it does not move at all, you have narrowed the fault to two candidates without yet separating them.

Then separate them by hand. With the actuator unbolted, move the operating arm through its full range of travel by hand. If it sweeps end to end freely, with no catching, the nozzle ring is moving as it should and the actuator is your suspect. If it binds, sticks part way, or will not move, the vane mechanism inside the turbine housing has seized and no work on the actuator will cure the car.

Two practical notes. On the 320 CDI the turbocharger sits in the vee between the cylinder banks and the intake assembly above it has to come off first, so this is not a kerbside job — but it is routine work for any competent independent garage, and the actuator is all we need. And do not plan on driving the car with the actuator unplugged or removed: the vanes are then left wherever they happened to be, with no control over them at all.

Why Cleaning a CLK Actuator Works — for a While

This is the most common thing CLK owners do, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a dismissal. The unit comes off, the internals get a spray of contact cleaner, the gear train gets a dab of high-temperature grease, it goes back on, and the fault disappears. Sometimes for months. Sometimes for a couple of years.

It works because it removes load. Carbon dust and dried, hardened grease raise the effort needed to turn the gear train, and a motor already past its best cannot overcome the extra drag. Take the drag away and the motor manages again — right up to the point where it does not.

What a clean does not touch is the wear that put you there. Brushes in a small DC motor shorten. The track a position sensor wipes across develops a worn band at the part of the travel the engine uses most, so the unit starts reporting a position it is not in. Solder joints and printed tracks that have spent years cycling between engine-bay heat and a cold morning develop hairline fractures that open under vibration and close again when everything expands. None of that improves with solvent, and all of it explains the shortening intervals.

So we do not clean a CLK actuator and reassemble it. The parts that have actually worn are renewed — motor, gear train, position sensor and seals — the board is reworked rather than wiped over, and the components with a known weakness in the original design are uprated rather than refitted. The unit that goes back on your turbocharger is not running the same clock down again.

There is one more reason cleaning is a short-term answer. Carbon inside the actuator arrived from the mechanism it drives. If the nozzle ring is stiffening, a freshly cleaned actuator is simply working just as hard against it as the old one was, and it will lose the same argument in the same way. That is exactly what the hand check above is for.

What Driving On Actually Costs

Plenty of CLKs are driven for months in this state because the car still moves. It is worth understanding what is happening while it does.

With the vanes stuck or wrongly positioned, the engine is fuelled for a boost pressure it is not receiving. Under-boost means overfuelling and soot — which is what the smoke is, and what a particulate filter has to deal with where one is fitted. If the vanes are stuck toward closed instead, the engine is working against raised exhaust back pressure and higher exhaust temperatures at the turbine.

The mechanical side compounds. The nozzle ring keeps carbon at bay by moving through its range; an actuator that can no longer sweep it properly leaves parts of that range unused, so deposits build in exactly the places that need to stay clear. Left long enough, a repair that was a small unit in a padded box becomes a turbocharger job — which is precisely the outcome most owners were trying to avoid.

Mercedes-Benz does not list the electronic actuator as a separate part. A franchised dealer therefore quotes the only thing available to quote: a complete turbocharger with an actuator attached, plus the labour to remove and refit it — which on the V6 means working in the vee of the engine to reach a serviceable turbocharger that is being scrapped for the sake of a sub-assembly bolted to its side. That leaves three routes and they are not equivalent.

A used actuator from a marketplace listing is the weakest of the three, and on a CLK it is weaker than usual. It has already covered an unknown distance down the same road as yours; it has to be matched on its G-code rather than on the base number to control your turbocharger correctly; and used units generally require coding to the vehicle before they will work at all. On a model that carried three different engines, a listing that says only “fits Mercedes CLK” is not telling you what you need to know.

A reconditioned exchange unit is faster, because a rebuilt actuator is already on a shelf. The trade-off is that it puts the identification problem straight back in front of you at the moment you had finally solved it: the one unit you know beyond doubt is correct for your turbocharger is the one that came off it, and under an exchange arrangement that unit goes the other way.

Rebuilding the unit you already own removes the question entirely. Your turbocharger stays on the car, the part that goes back is the part that came off, and it is calibrated against the travel of the turbocharger it belongs to. Diagnosing a CLK actuator is not the hard part. The symptoms are consistent, the progression from a hot-weather flat spot to permanent limp mode is recognisable, and the hand check settles the actuator-or-turbocharger question in a couple of minutes on the bench. The difficulty is that the CLK badge sat on three unrelated diesel engines, so almost every reference, listing and piece of advice written for “a CLK” may have been written about a different car from yours.
